Woman, 40, commits suicide

Residents of Jisonayili, a suburb of Tamale, were thrown into a state of shock when news went round that a woman allegedly locked herself up in a room and poisoned herself.

Ramatu Yakubu, 40, a mother of three, reportedly took weedicide to end her life.

The Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Northern Regional Police Command, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Ebenezer Tetteh, told The Mirror that the police had information that Yakubu had poisoned herself and so they went to the scene to ascertain the veracity of the information.

According to ASP Tetteh, when the police got to the scene they discovered that Yakubu was foaming in the mouth, with a pungent smell coming out of her room.

He said the police examined the body and found out that there was no body injury or signs of strangulation and so they continued to search her room and later found a plastic container with a quantity of liquid suspected to be weedicide.

Preliminary investigations by the police indicated that Yakubu and her husband had been at loggerheads lately.

The police gathered that at a point Yakubu allegedly asked for money from her husband to establish a business but the husband could not give her the money because he said he had invested all the money he had in a number of projects.

The police were also informed that since 2004 until her demise, Yakubu had allegedly attempted to take her life on four occasions.

However, some eyewitnesses told the police that Yakubu had also been accusing her husband of infidelity. She was buried last Sunday.
