Winneba Secondary School obtains best grades since establishment

Winneba (C/R), Jan. 5, GNA – The Winneba Secondary School obtained its best results since the establishment of the school some thirty years ago in last year’s Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSSCE).

Out of 418 candidates presented 341 passed in between six and eight subjects, Mr. Geoffrey Eduam Yarney, the school’s Headmaster disclosed in an interview with the Ghana News Agency at Winneba on Tuesday. He attributed the success to measures put place by the Board and Administration of the school, which included the organisation of workshops on capacity building for tutors and some assistance to teachers to give of their best.

Mr. Yarney said that the school was also good at sports and that in the sub-zonal competition it came first in the boy’s soccer, which qualified it to play in the MILO games qualifiers on December 3, last year.

He said the school also came first in hockey, basketball, handball and table tennis for both boys and girls and expressed the hope to maintain this high standard in the 2005 MILO games.

According to the headmaster, despite these achievements the school was facing a number of problems including inadequate accommodation for both students, teachers and non-teaching staff.

He said the situation had compelled most of the girls to be accommodated in private hostels outside the school campus, making their supervision very difficult.

The headmaster said that the school needed a multipurpose assembly hall to cater for final year examinations and other social gatherings, saying that presently there was no hall or room that could accommodate final year candidates all at once.
