WiLDAF organises forum on district assembly elections

Sekondi, June 21, GNA – Women in Law and Development in Africa (WiLDAF) on Tuesday organised a forum for members of district assemblies and gender desk officers from four districts at Sekondi. The districts are Nzema East, Wassa West and Mpohor Wassa East as well as the Shama-Ahanta East Metropolis.

The forum was under the theme “Women in Local Governance”. Opening the forum Mr John Baidoo, a legal officer of WiLDAF, said it was to afford the participants to brainstorm on how to increase women representation in the district assemblies.

He said it was also to encourage women to actively participate in local governance.

Mr Baidoo called on women to contest the forthcoming district level elections to enable them champion the cause of women in the assemblies and assist to improve conditions in their communities. Miss Ekua Ansah-Eshon, a director and Programmes Coordinator of Advocates and Trainers for Women’s Welfare, Advancement and Rights (ATWAAR), appealed to women to show interest in local governance and offer themselves as candidates in the election. She said she was happy that women candidates who do not have the resources would be supported with a fund established by the Ministry of Women and Children’s Affairs.
