WiLDAF offers free health screening

Women in Law and Development in Africa (WiLDAF) has held a free health screening exercise for the people of Baware and its environs in Akuapim North District on ailments like cervical and breast cancer.

The exercise, which also included malaria screening and education on prenatal care, was supported by the European Union, Tobinco Pharmaceuticals and Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

The programme, which was aimed at addressing maternal mortality among women and pregnant teenagers, was on the theme: “Maternal Heath in Community Hands.”

It would be implemented for three years to provide proper health care delivery to deprived communities

Mr Frank Bodza member of the WiLDAF team said the exercise was part of project activities in fulfilment of Article 12 and 15 of the Convention on Elimination of Discrimination Against Women and to mark the breast cancer awareness month.

Mr Bodza said in view of this WiLDAF-Ghana took health service to the doorsteps of rural communities by organising a mobile health clinic in two communities in the Akuapim North District.

Mrs Bernice Frimpong Ankrah, Country Director of Days for Girls, a non-governmental organisation on the sidelines of the exercise educated women and teenage girls at Asenema D/A Primary School on personal hygiene, how to properly wash their hands with soap and water, and to protect themselves from sexual attacks and sexually transmitted diseases.

She distributed free reusable sanitary pads to the students and women in the community.

WiLDAF Ghana is a Pan – African women’s rights non-for-profit organisation dedicated to promote and protect the rights of women through strategies that link law and development and increasing women‘s participation and influence at the community, national and international levels.
