Women in Law and Development in Africa (WiLDAF) in collaboration with Crossroads International, a non-governmental organisation, has held a seminar in Accra to help fight violence against women and children.
A statement issued in Accra by Ms Patricia Essel, Communication and Advocacy Manager for WiLDAF and copied to Ghana News Agency at the weekend said the seminar forms part of Ghana’s activities to mark the 16 days of activism on violence against women stated for October 25 and would be ending on December 10.
It said the theme: “Violence against Women and Children; the role of the police,” is to ensure police involvement in eliminating the canker.
The statement said the 16 days is a global campaign to raise awareness about violence against women and its impact on a woman’s physical, psychological, social and spiritual well-being.
It asked children to report acts of sexual violence to their teachers, members of the girls’ empowerment clubs or anyone they trust.
It said a representative from the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit of Ghana Police Service urged all to break the silence on domestic violence by speaking up and reporting any form of abuse to the police.
The statement said it is sad that sometimes the very people who are to protect children are those that violate them.
He said the Police are always at their service and should not be scared to report to them any form of abuse.
The statement said all forms of sexual violence cannot and should never be settled out of court since it is a serious offence and the perpetrator should be made to pay for the crime.
