Why I was not confirmed as MCE – Local Governance expert breaks silence

The President’s nominee as Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for the Asante Akim Central Municipality and local government expert, Mr. George Kyei Baaffour said to have failed to bribe Assembly members for endorsement has also accused chiefs in the area of engaging in illegal mining activities.

“Chiefs engaging in illegal mining worked against my confirmation as MCE. They know if I get the nod I will not allow them to carry their illegal business”, the former Presiding Member (MP) at the Assembly alleged.

The rejected nominee who spoke on a local FM station in the Municipality alleged the chiefs managed to influence government appointees and some elected members on their side to ensure he does not get endorsement.

“Partisan politics at the Assembly also cost me. Majority of the members who are New Patriotic Party sympathizers even voted against me”, the former president, National Association of Local Authorities of Ghana (NALAG) explained.

He also stated that some civil servants at the Assembly worked against him because they know he will not allow corruption under his watch which they are alleged to be neck-deep.

According to Mr. George Kyei Baffour, the civil servants are pulling strings behind the scenes and coercing assembly members to ensure he does not get the nod to become MCE for the area

“Some civil servants also do not want me to come because they know I will not entertain their corrupt activities”

He attributed the fallout of nominees across the country to applicants who showed interest in the positions but were denied by the President.
