Why A-G Threw Away NDC Chairman’s Case

The Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Mrs. Betty Mould-Iddrisu, says if the Police Criminal Investigations Department (CID) should refer the case involving some top New Patriotic Party (NPP) leaders to her office, their docket will receive the same attention as National Democratic Congress Chairman, Dr. Kwabena Adjei.

She said every docket referred to the office is assessed on the merit of evidence gathered before prosecution is advised as the next pursuit of action.

The Attorney-General’s office threw out a complaint the CID referred to it over Dr. Adjei’s alleged subversive comments urging the Chief Justice to purge the judiciary against the backdrop of a chain of losses of court cases by government.

The CID on Tuesday, September 28, invited three NPP leaders, namely, Mr. Jake Obetsebi-Lamptey, the National Chairman, Mr. Kwadow Owusu Afriyie, General Secretary and Ms. Frances Essiam, a member of the communication team to assist in investigations over their comments of an alleged murder of three persons during the by-election in the Atiwa constituency.

Mrs. Mould-Iddrisu said her office decided to discontinue any criminal charges against Dr. Adjei because upon review of the case, there was no merit in the issues raised. She said upon careful study of the docket no criminal intent was established, therefore, her office could not advise for charges of treason against Dr. Adjei.

Dr. Adjei’s comment about cleansing of the Judiciary was met with an avalanche of criticisms. The Minority in Parliament described the comment as treasonable and called for his arrest and prosecution.

Subsequently, a pressure group, Alliance for Accountable Governance (AFAG), reported the case to the Police after which the matter was referred to the Attorney-General’s office.

Similarly, a group by mane Media Analysts petitioned the CID in respect of comments passed by the three NPP members alleging that the NDC masterminded the murder of some people during the Atiwa by-election. They have since responded to the police invitation.
