Hohoe, (V/R) Oct 13, GNA – Wheels 4 Life, a United States based non-profit organization and its local agent, Affordable Rural Transport Project (AFRP)have distributed 50 racers, worth 4,500 dollars to students, members of the public and private institutions in the Hohoe Municipality of the Volta Region. They also intend to establish a Cycling Village in the area to train prospective cyclists and enthusiasts to achieve the level of internationally acclaimed and acceptable status. Mr Reagan Tepretu, Coordinator of the Project who disclosed these to the GNA Sports at a ground-breaking gesture, said the Municipality has the right terrain and altitude, which are important ingredients in plying professional cycling.
The racers were sponsored by Mr Hans Rey, Executive Director of Wheels 4 Life, also a Cyclist Legend. The coordinator said under the project, 500 more bicycles would be distributed to beneficiaries in the catchment area to facilitate means of transportation among deprived and poor people, who cannot easily afford buying bicycles for their every day use. Mr Tepretu said bicycles were reliable and economically affordable and serve as alternate means of transport in the face of the global price hikes in petroleum products and its attendant emission of carbon monoxide, a major cause of global warming. He said he was optimistic that the project would bring relief economically and socially to cycling enthusiasts as well as its nobility of reducing health related problems. Mr Tepretu said he also envisages that the project would facilitate prompt honouring of schedules and appointments on environmentally friendly basis by the people. He said with the ingenuity of Wheels 4 Life, he was hopeful that Ghana would in the nearest future boast of many world acclaimed cyclists who can bring many laurels to the country.
