Western University College students demonstrate against SSNIT

Students of Western University College (WUC) on Thursday morning embarked on a two-hour demonstration against the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) for the delay in the payment of their student loans.

Numbering about 1000, the students started from WUC campus and walked for more than one kilometre amidst singing and drumming, to the offices of the SSNIT. Some sat down on the floor while others lied down and wailed apparently to disturb official of the SSNIT who were working in their offices.

Mr Louis Gyawu, a student leader expressed his displeasure about the disbursement of students’ loan. He said it was becoming routine that every year students had to demonstrate before their loans were paid.

Mr Joseph Bansah, Tarkwah District Manager of SSNIT told the students that the cheque for the payment of the loan was posted only yesterday.

He therefore pleaded with them to return to campus while the necessary arrangements for the payment of the loans were made. Meanwhile the students have returned to campus.
