Western regional police command cries for assistance

Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Kwasi Mensah Duku, Western Regional Police Commander, has called on government for assistance to improve the work of the police in the Region.

DCOP Duku said the police operation is facing a lot of challenges and needed serious attention.

He made this statement during a 3-day official visit by the Minister for Interior in the Region on Monday, 9th October 2017.

DCOP Duku appealed to government to address the accommodation challenges facing the police in the Region.

He added that in order for the police to fight against crime in the Region, government has to pay much attention to their needs.

“Some police barracks in the Region are not in good condition, we lack accommodation, we need modern logistics to improve our work”, he lamented.

He therefore as a matter of urgency, pleaded with the Interior Minister to forward their concerns to government for immediate attention.

DCOP also narrated the incident at Wassa Akropong during which a national allegedly shot and killed one Nana Buah, an indigene.

He said the alleged killer had been arrested while the presence of personnel there had helped to restore calm in the area.

Hon Ambrose Dery, the Interior Minister, lauded the relentless efforts of the police service in maintaining law and order within the Region.

The Interior Minister was highly impressed with the performance of the Ghana police in the Region.

According to the Minister, available statistics indicated that from January to September last year, the region recorded 91 robbery cases, while 39 cases have been recorded for the same period this year, representing 57 per cent reduction in robbery cases

He added “Stealing cases also reduced from 3,101 in the 3rd quarter of last year to 911 within the same period this year”.

He assured the police personnel that the government would continue to support with the needed vehicles, rifles, accommodation and other protective gadgets and transform the police service.

The Interior Minister also assured them of government commitment of addressing some of the challenges facing the police in the Region.

He expressed his profound appreciation to the Police Command for discharging their duties diligently without fear or panic.

“On behalf of President Nana Addo, your work is well appreciated”, he added.

He urged the police in the Region to eschew any negative attitude and behaviour that would dent the good image of the police service.
