Western Region records high rent cases

Takoradi, March 2, GNA – The Western Regional Office of the Rent Control Department recorded 344 rent dispute cases in 2009.

The figure represented a slit increase in the cases recorded in 2008 totalling 339. Most of the cases were heard and settled according to the Principal Rent Officer, Mr Twum Ampofo.

Mr Ampofo told the GNA on Tuesday that most of the complaint by landlords mostly fell under Recovery of Possession. Other forms of reported cases included inducing tenant to quit, nuisance and ejectment and refund of rent.

He said Takoradi recorded the highest cases both in 2008 and 2009 probably due to the oil find and the rampart uproar that had risen between tenants and landlords recently. In 2008, Takoradi recorded 191 cases, Sekondi 114 and Kwesimimtin 34. Year 2009

however saw Takoradi recording 204 cases, Sekondi 107 and Kwesimimtin 33 cases. Mr Ampofo said the Rent Act of 63 enjoined landlords and tenants to resort to rightful

procedures in settling cases.
