Western Region is fourth in development

The Western Region ranks fourth on the League Table developed by the Center for Democratic Development (CDD) and the United Nations Children’s Fund UNICEF) to measure the level of development across the regions.

The report said Region was doing well in terms of development, though it had major challenges with ending open defecation and improving Police coverage.

The League Table also measures the progress of the districts across the country.

The league table works with six indicators: Health, Governance, Education, Security, Sanitation and Water.

Dr. Franklin Oduro, Deputy Director of CDD-Ghana, said the objective was to discuss issues of accountability and how all stakeholders could contribute to democratic governance and socio-economic development through their local government assemblies.

He said a lot more was required in improving the well-being of Ghanaians, especially the poor and the marginalized, emphasising that there was the need for citizens to engage duty bearers over issues that affected their development.

Dr. Oduro explained that various developmental discourse had identified access to quality services as critical in promoting participation, responsiveness, and accountability.

He said the District League Table was another avenue to enhance the delivery of public goods and services in the assemblies as a means to scale up social accountability for development across the 216 assemblies.
