Winneba, April 14, GNA – The Member of Parliament for Amenfi East, Mr Joseph Boahen Aidoo, has appealed to citizens of the Western Region to unite and promote the development of the region. He said the Region had been denied many amenities over the years and that they should see themselves as one people, tolerate each other and to fight for things that are due the Region.
Mr Aidoo said this at the first anniversary celebration of Western Region Students Union of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW).
It was under the theme 93The need for unity and development, the role of Western Region Students”.
He said efforts were being made by the Members of Parliament from the area to impress upon the government to be fair when sharing the national cake.
The Rev Fr Frank Amoah, the President of the UEW Union, said the Union was formed to partner their leaders, politicians, and chiefs to promote education as well as development through unity and dialogue. He appealed to traditional rulers to avoid chieftaincy disputes and fight together as one body to demand what is due the Region. Mr Ernest Gyabeng of the Commission on Human Right and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), Tarkwa, told the students that as agents of change they should increase their knowledge base beyond their chosen field of study.
Dr Charles Owu-Ewie, a Lecturer at UEW, appealed to Ghanaians to take a look at countries that are ravaged by conflicts and always promote peace and development.
Mr Mathias Kwame Ntow, the Member of Parliament of Aowin, said the government was committed to the development of the Western Region and it had demonstrated this through the provision of schools, expansion of electricity and new roads.
He said the only challenge the nation was facing was how to share resources equitably.
Mr Ntow appealed to citizens of the Western Region to exercise restrain while the government ensured that every region got its fair share of the national cake.
