Accra, Feb. 23, GNA- The 47th West Volta Presbyters Conference of the Evangelical Presbyterian (EP) Church of Ghana was on Saturday held in Accra with a call on government to reintroduce Religious and Moral Education in the new educational reform.
The Conference, attended by over 250 presbyters from Greater Accra, Eastern, Central and Western regions under the theme: “Christian Stewardship Revisited” also called for political tolerance among all political parties to ensure free and fair elections, come December. Mr. Emmanuel Danku, President of the West Volta Presbyters said, including RME in the educational curriculum was key to reverse declining moral values in the country.
He said the Conference, which was to review performance of presbyters in 2007 was also an occasion to draw presbyters’ attention on other pertinent national and religious issues. Mr Danku said high on the agenda was the need for presbyters to lead the congregation into intercessory prayers for peace to prevail in Ghana, especially in the three northern regions. He stated that the EP Church had noted with great concern the prevailing conflict at Bawku and other parts of northern Ghana, which often resulted in destruction of lives and properties and retarded development in the area.
While the church played its role in campaigning for peace, he said, government should initiate talks with the people to create cohesion.
Mr Danku also called on the Christian Council of Ghana to set aside a special day for all churches to pray for peaceful December elections and peace in the northern regions. On issues related to the Church, the West Volta Presbyters President announced that the Church had established a University in Ho, which would begin admissions in March and appealed to government and stakeholders to support the University, since it was the first in the Volta Region. He also hinted that the EP Church would mark its 160th Anniversary celebrations this year, adding that proceeds from the thanksgiving service would be used to construct a resource centre at Kpong and for other development projects. Mr Danku said the Church also hoped to organise a seminar for the congregation aimed at identifying threats and challenges confronting Christian marriages to reverse the high divorce rate.
