Asante Kotoko’s Communications Director, Safo Duku, has expressed deep disappointment in former midfielder Justice Blay following a series of explosive claims made by the player during a radio interview.
Blay, speaking on Kumasi-based Pure FM earlier this week, alleged that some of his former teammates were engaging in misconduct, including drinking alcohol during camp and even going as far as “snatching each other’s girlfriends.” The remarks quickly went viral and sparked heated debate among fans and pundits alike.
Reacting to the allegations during an interview on Kick Off on Luv FM, Safo Duku said the club was shocked and saddened by the comments, especially given the peaceful and mutual nature of Blay’s departure from the club.
“We think that the comments from our former player are very unfortunate and it was least expected from him,” Duku said. “After we had a very fruitful discussion and mutually terminated our contract, we thought that the dust had settled. And for him to have gone out there to make those comments is very unfortunate.”
Mr. Duku, who is also a lawyer, confirmed that the club has launched an internal investigation into the allegations and hinted that an official statement may be released in the coming days.
“These are allegations that he has made. We are investigating the issues and then we will come out at the appropriate time,” he added.
In the wake of the backlash, Justice Blay has since issued a public apology to both his former teammates and the club’s supporters, acknowledging that his words may have been poorly chosen and caused unnecessary controversy.
The midfielder’s apology, however, has done little to quell the concern among fans, many of whom are now demanding transparency and accountability from the club regarding the truth of the allegations.
Asante Kotoko, one of Ghana’s most storied football clubs, is no stranger to off-field drama, but this latest controversy has reignited conversations about professionalism and discipline within the local game. All eyes will be on the club’s next move as investigations continue.
