Wenchi (B/A), Dec. 20, GNA – Mrs. Ibrahim Bintu Farizana, Wenchi District Chief Executive (DCE) has urged Assembly Members, unit committees, traditional authorities and religious leaders to educate the people against indulging in activities that could adversely affect the environment as well as cause the outbreak of epidemics.
Mrs. Farizana was inaugurating the local Boadan Kroye Kuo, a welfare club formed by residents of Boadan in Wenchi, which aims at promoting love, unity and cooperation among members. The club members will also ensure that the young ones in the area were enrolled in schools.
The DCE commended members for their foresight and urged them to remain united and respect each other’s views. Mrs. Farizana urged members of the club to join the campaign against pre-marital and illicit sexual practices among the youth. She appealed to the people to avoid setting fires in the bush during the harmattan season to protect the environment, life and property.
Mr. Stephen Kwabena Effah, Wenchi District Environmental Health Officer, cautioned the people against littering the streets and other unhygienic acts, saying about 60 percent of illnesses in the area was caused by poor sanitation.
He called on the government to allocate a bigger budget for education against diseases.
Chief Superintendent J. M. Formedi, Wenchi divisional police Commander, called on members of the club to join hands with the police to combat crime in the communities.
In a welcoming address, Mr. Joseph Kwadwo Mensah, chairman of the club, paid a special tribute to the Assembly Member of Boadan, Madam Beatrice Bodom, for spearheading the formation of the club. Mr. Mensah, a teacher, urged parents to take advantage of the capitation grant scheme and enrol their wards in schools to enable them to become responsible adults.
Nana Addo Kumanini Kesseh 1, Tufohene of Wenchi traditional area, who presided, complained of lack of toilets in Wenchi and appealed to the DCE to help address the problem to enhance sanitation in the community.
