Black Queens midfielder Josephine Bonsu says the team is embracing the pressure ahead of their much-anticipated quarter-final showdown with Algeria in the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), set for Saturday, July 19.
Speaking confidently ahead of the clash, Bonsu acknowledged the weight of expectation on the team, but insisted that it’s fueling their determination to push further in the tournament.
“There’s pressure, yes, but we want to turn it into motivation,” she said. “We know what this game means, not just for us as players, but for Ghanaians back home who believe in us.”
The match marks the Queens’ first appearance in the WAFCON quarter-finals since 2016, after a strong comeback in the group stage that included a 4-1 win over Tanzania.
Bonsu, who has been instrumental in Ghana’s midfield so far, said the squad remains focused, united, and hungry for victory.
“We’ve prepared well, and the energy in camp is positive. We respect Algeria, but we’re ready to fight for every ball and play our hearts out,” she added.
The team’s recent form has reignited hope among supporters, with many rallying behind the Queens as they chase a long-awaited spot in the semi-finals, and possibly a title shot.
