We’ll find a way of training our guards – NPP vows

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) says it is undaunted by the deportation of the three South African ex-police officers brought in to train the security detail of its leader and his running mate.

According to the party, the move by government to deport the South Africans was to prevent the party from adequately securing Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and his running mate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

Speaking on TV3’s News 360, Communications Director Nana Akomea stressed that: “We will find a way of upgrading [the guards’] training. So that will not worry us”.

The training of 15 members of the NPP in ‘VIP’ protection for its leader, Nana Addo, and running mate Dr. Bawumia, by the ex-cops from South Africa was considered a terror threat by the National Security as it rounded them up at the El-Capitano Hotel in the Central Region.

The three foreign nationals as well as Captain (rtd) Edmund Koda and Captain Acquah were charged at an Accra court for conspiracy to commit crime and unlawful training but were granted bail last Thursday.

They were, however, held under detention until Tuesday morning when they were flown out of Ghana.

Nana Akomea raised concerns about the detention of the foreigners, calling for investigation and possible sanctions on the BNI official responsible for the “unlawful” action.

“We are calling on the president to have this matter investigated and whoever in BNI caused the organisation to infringe [upon] the very laws that they are meant to protect, those people should be punished if the president is to show that he is committed to constitutional rule and the rule of law”.
