Welder gets eight years for defilement

Accra, April 17, GNA – A Circuit Court in Accra on Thursday sentenced a 36 year-old welder to eight years imprisonment in hard labour for defiling a 12 year-old pupil at La in Accra. David Adja charged with defilement, pleaded not guilty. The court, presided over by Mrs Georgina Mensah-Datsa, however, found him guilty and ordered that his sentence should take effect from the day of his arrest in June 2005.

The prosecutor, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Mr George Abavelim, said the victim lived with the complainant’s sisters at La in Accra. In June 2005, the women realised that the victim experienced some difficulty when walking and when she was queried, she disclosed that it was Adja who had defiled her on three occasions. The prosecution said a report was made to the Police and Adja was arrested but he denied the offence.
