Weija Dam spillage begins

The Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) has today Wednesday begun spilling excess water from the Weija Dam.

According to the Water Company, the move is to prevent the dam from collapsing, as its capacity cannot be over-stretched.

As has been the norm, GWCL has since last week warned residents residing downstream the dam in areas such as Bortiano, Tsokome, Lower Weija, Sapema, Lower McCathey, Lower Oblogo and Pambrose in the Ga South Municipality to relocate to avoid the needless loss of human life.

Speaking to Kasapa News, the Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Water Company Limited, Stanley Martey stated that whoever continued to live in the dam’s catchment area, as the water is spilled does that at his or her own peril.

“GWCL should not be blamed in the unfortunate incident that any recalcitrant resident dies, since we have run several announcements on this issue. We expect them to comply with the directive being given to ensure no precious life is lost.”

He however disclosed that the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) has been alerted to deal with any eventuality that might occur during the spillage.
