We will protect your electoral rights – CJ assures Ghanaians

Chief Justice Georgina Theodora Wood has assured Ghanaians of the judiciary’s readiness to protect the electoral rights of the citizenry as the country readies itself for the December elections.

Speaking at a forum in Accra on Monday, Her Ladyship Georgina Wood said despite the likelihood of Ghanaians witnessing more electoral disputes this year, the Judiciary has the capacity to effectively deal with any such issues that may arise .

She said ” …this is where I would like to assure our people that the judiciary has the men and women committed to safeguarding and protecting their electoral rights. Rights which are clearly based on the fundamental rights of the individual.”

Ghana in 2013 went through one of its most trying moments following a decision by the largest opposition party in the country to contest the results of the 2012 general elections.

A long-drawn legal tussle which lasted several months was enough to bring closure to the otherwise disputed election results and test the resolve of the judiciary in the handling of such high profile election-related cases.

But ahead of this year’s polls, the Chief Justice is confident issues of such nature will be dealt with in a swift manner regardless of projection of an increase in number.
