Ghana’s Minister of Youth and Sports, Kofi Adams, has disclosed that the government secured a GH₵20 million bank loan to support the ongoing Ghana Premier League season.
Speaking in an interview with Accra-based Peace FM, Mr. Adams said the decision was taken as part of a broader effort to stabilise and strengthen the country’s top-flight football competition amid financial challenges.
“We took a loan of 20 million cedis from the bank as investment into the Ghana Premier League,” he revealed. “We are now working with corporate institutions to pay back this loan as soon as possible.”
The move comes at a time when the Ministry continues to seek sustainable sponsorship deals for the league, which has struggled in recent years to attract major commercial backing.
Mr. Adams explained that the investment was necessary to ensure the smooth running of the competition and to maintain the standard of operations for clubs, referees, and match organisation while sponsorship negotiations continue.
The Ministry insists, however, that discussions with private companies are progressing positively, with hopes that future partnerships will help repay the loan and provide a lasting financial foundation for Ghana’s premier football competition.
