Member of Parliament for Okaikwei Central, Patrick Yaw Boamah, has called for greater attention to Ghana’s goalkeeping department ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, stressing the need to prepare mentally and technically for the global stage.
Speaking on Sporty FM, the lawmaker praised Ghana’s current crop of goalkeepers, particularly Benjamin Asare, but cautioned that the World Cup presents a far sterner test.
“We need to build our goalkeeping area well because we’re going to play in the World Cup,” he said.
“Benjamin Asare is good, but we must help him build his confidence. The World Cup is a different kettle of fish; there will be 70,000 or 80,000 people in the stands, and stage fright can be very worrying.”
Boamah’s remarks come as the Black Stars step up preparations for their fifth World Cup appearance, having sealed qualification after defeating Comoros in the final round of qualifiers.
Head coach Otto Addo is expected to assess his goalkeeping options during next month’s international friendlies against Japan and South Korea as part of Ghana’s build-up to the tournament in the USA, Canada, and Mexico.
The MP’s comments echo a wider sentiment among football observers who believe that strengthening the goalkeeping unit could prove pivotal to Ghana’s success on the world stage.
