We are in danger – Sogakope SHS girls

Female students of the Sogakope Senior High School in the Volta Region continue to endure sexual harassment from men predators.

The students made distress calls to Citi News in January and stated that the men in the area have on several occasions intentionally demolished the school wall in order to gain easy access to the school compound.

They also stated that some have also encroached on the land. This has caused a lot of insecurities and it has also affected teaching and learning in the school.

Speaking to Citi News, Bernice Yekple, a student of the Sogakope Senior High School who nearly got raped said “at 5am in the morning, I went out to attend to nature’s call. When I entered, I saw the shadow of a person which got frightened. The man covered my face with a piece of cloth and tried raping me.”

According to her, the man took to his heels when she started shouting for help.

“I screamed for help which caused some of the students as well as the security men to come to my rescue. He took off to his heels through the bush when he heard that they were fast approaching,” she added.

She indicated that because the school is not fenced they are always being attacked by wee smokers and other men in the area.
