We are disappointed in unpaid teachers – GNAT

The General Secretary of Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) David Ofori Acheampong has expressed disappointment in the Unpaid Teachers Association (a group made up of about 3500 trained teachers) for suggesting that GNAT has done little to help them to get their 3 years salaries.

This was after the President of Unpaid Teachers Effah Eric Darko has alleged on Onua fm that they have been neglected by GNAT.

According to the GNAT General Secretary who spoke on phone, “it is unfair on the part of the Unpaid Teachers to claim GNAT is adamant in fighting for them that is not true, I can tell you that we have met with them and these things go through processes, and although they are not registered with GNAT, we are still helping them”.

Mr. David Ofori Acheampong told the host of Ghana Dadwen on Onua fm that it is important the Unpaid Teachers know that it is not GNAT that will pay them so if they are going round bad mouthing GNAT that will be unfortunate.

“They don’t belong to any teacher group and government will deal speedily with a recognised group. I am not saying they will not be paid but the process will be faster if they belong to one of the teacher groups, they should wait for the process to complete” David Ofori Acheampong stated.

Meanwhile, President of Unpaid Teachers Effah Eric Darko in reaction to the GNAT General Secretary’s comment said the over 3000 Unpaid Teachers are not happy with some treatments meted out to them anytime they called on GNAT for help; saying although they are not belonging to any group, they are also teachers who are fighting for their right.

He added that “We were validated on the field. A team of auditors comprising GES and other organizations came on the field last year, 2015 November-December and we were assured that our report has been submitted to the Ministry of Finance and our checks confirmed that the report was submitted on the 30th March, but as at now, we have not heard anything from them again.”

Effah Eric Darko also maintained that come Wednesday 11th May 2016, the group will picket at the Ministry of Finance
