Water shortage hits Agona Swedru and environs

Agona Swedru June 1 GNA- Seven towns under the Swedru District Water Supply System have been hit by severe water shortage for the past two weeks, creating hardship on the consumers. The towns are Swedru, Nyakrom, Potsin, Dawurampong, Kwaaman, Bisease and Agona Nsaba.

Mr Kwesi Quansah, Assemblyman for Dwenho, a suburb of Agona Swedru and Mr McKenzie Armah, Assemblyman for Agona Nsaba Saalem Electoral Area, told this to Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Agona Swedru on Friday. They said the situation had forced some residents to walk long distances to fetch unhygienic water, adding that it had also compelled the people, especially school children to buy water at exorbitant prices from water tanker suppliers.

When GNA contacted Mr Baffour Ofosu-Addea, Swedru Area Manager of the Ghana Water Company Limited/AVRL, he confirmed the situation and attributed the shortage to frequent power outages being experienced at the Agona Kwanyako Treatment Plant.

He noted that water supply to the areas had been affected by low pressure, due to insufficient power supply for the pumping machine. Mr Ofosu-Addea said it was not the intention of the Company to refuse to supply water to the communities and entreated customers in the Swedru District to store water to avert hardship and outbreak of diseases. He said that until regular power supply was restored to the Treatment Plant, water supply to these areas would be rationed.
