Agona Kwanyako (Central Region), 29 Oct. An acute water shortage has hit Agona and Ajumako-Enyan-Essiam districts and parts of the Mfantseman district, all in the central region. This has been caused by a broken pipeline from the Kwanyako waterworks as a result of erosion. The fault which was detected on October 25 has compelled residents of Agona Swedru and its environs to depend on streams, ponds and wells with a bucket of water selling between 100 and 150 cedis. A cup of ice water is being sold for 30 and 40 cedis. Mr Francis Awotwi, operations and maintenance engineer of the Ghana Water and Sewerage Corporation (GWSC) in charge of the Central region, told the Agona district chief executive, Mr Samuel Adu-Yeboah, yesterday that efforts are being made to repair the damaged pipeline within the shortest possible time. He said urgent messages have been sent to the Regional engineer of the GWSC and the Regional Minister, Mr Kojo Yankah for assistance to solve the problem. Mr Awotwi appealed to the chiefs, and assembly members in the area to educate their people on the need to protect water installations. Mr Adu-Yeboah said the district assembly is making every effort to arrange for water tankers to supply water to institutions and communities affected until the situation is normalised. The GWSC has despatched a water tanker to supply water to educational institutions in the area.
