Watchmen at Berekum form association

Berekum (B/A) May 20 GNA – About 45 watchmen in government departments and institutions in the Berekum District have come together to form an association of government security workers to combat increasing incidents of armed robbery and stealing in state institutions.

The association aims at co-ordinating activities and co-operating with other government security agencies to update their knowledge in modern methods surveillance.

At its maiden meeting at Berekum on Friday, the Brong Ahafo Regional Labour Officer, Mr Nat Richard Kusi commended the members for forming the association to protect their interests.

He asked them to embark on intensive education programme for its members to enhance their knowledge to enable them to perform their responsibilities creditably and learn about the latest developments on the labour front.

Mr Kusi advised them to channel their grievances through the appropriate quarters for redress and urged them to contact their union executives on issues that they do not understand.

Mr Jacob Bofa, Secretary of the Berekum District Council of Labour, called on them to use their collective bargaining agreement as a guide on all issues concerning their welfare.

Other issues discussed at the meeting included payment of overtime, the Workman’s Compensation Act, provision of protective clothing, extra duty allowance, poor remuneration and the Ghana Universal Salary Structure.

Malam T. Mumuni was elected as Chairman, Mr Kwabena Gonja, Vice-chairman, Mr Hilary Suurbelene, Secretary, Mr Philip Yeboah, Assistant Secretary, Mr. Francis Yuomuro, Financial Secretary and Mr Isaka Musa, Organiser.
