Asankrangwa (W/R), Aug. 20, GNA – More than 100 members of the Wassa Amenfi Students Union (WASU) have begun a Voluntary Teaching Programme in 50 basic schools in deprived communities in the Wassa Amenfi District.
From their own resources, the students would donate books worth 1.5 million cedis to enhance teaching and learning and offer counselling services.
Mr Tony Bimpong, National President of WASU, announced this at a forum at Asankrangwa on Monday, to review and evolve strategies to coordinate the activities of stakeholders to promote education. He said the programme was to supplement the efforts of the District Assembly and the Ghana Education Service (GES) to help raise the standard of education.
Although 250 teachers were needed in the district this academic year, only 26 were posted by the GES.
Mr. Bimpong said WASU had decided to open computer-training centres at Wassa Akropong, Manso Amenfi and Asankrangwa and appealed for assistance to make the project a reality.
Mr Alberto Takyi, District Chief Executive, said 1.6 billion cedis from the HPIC fund had been allocated for the provision of facilities at the Amenfiman Senior Secondary School.
He advised the communities to take a cue from the people of Aku Nkwanta, Gunokrom, Toronpine and Prestea Nkwanta to provide permanent accommodation for teachers.
Mr Takyi said Ghana Telecom had acquired land at Asankrangwa to provide the area with digital Telephone facility by the end of the year.
