Waste Collectors advocate waste separation policy

The Plastic Waste Collectors Association of Ghana has called on the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Develop to promulgate a national waste separation policy to boost their businesses.

The Association said the policy would promote recycling of plastic waste as well as composting of organic waste, which would reduce the burden on the existing dumping and land-fill sites in the country.

Mr Godwin Woasey, Chairman of the Association made the call in Accra at a capacity-building training workshop on the practice of effective advocacy.

Business Sector Advocacy Challenge Fund (BUSAC) organised the workshop to equip the participants to plan and implement advocacy action in the most effective way that would lead to the improvement of the income earning capacity of members.

He said waste management had been challenged by many factors including the non-separation of garbage which was increasing the volumes dumped at the landfill sites.

He said the cost of recycling is tripled when waste is not separated because contamination level increases.

The participants applauded the establishment of the sanitation courts and suggested that it should be established in all district assemblies.

Dr Reuben Tettey, a consultant of DANIDA and Resource Person advised the participants on the importance of good record keeping.
