WASSCE candidates arrested for gang-raping girl, 16

The Akyem Akokoaso Police in the Akyemansa District of the Eastern region has arrested two candidates of the just ended West Africa Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for allegedly gang raping a 16-year-old female student.

The suspects and their victim are both students of Akokoaso Senior High Technical School.

The suspects, Ofosu Manu, 18, and Isaac Ameko, 17, were arrested on Thursday after writing their last examination paper. The incident occurred on Wednesday.

The suspects are in police custody assisting investigations.

The Akyemansa District Police Commander, DSP Ofosu Anim, explained to the Daily Heritage that, the headmaster of Akokoaso Senior High Technical School, Edward Brown, lodged a complaint to the Police that a 16-year-old female student of the school, Georgina Ankomah, reported to the school’s authority with tears that she had been gang raped by the two suspects.

He said the headmaster explained to the police that the victim was accompanied by the two suspects to collect her repaired mobile phone in town, in the evening.

According to the Police commander, after collecting the mobile phone, the victim and the suspect visited another male candidate, Hammond, who was not feeling well in his house.

He said when they got there, Hammond who they went to visit left the house to buy food leaving behind the victim and the suspects alone in the room.

He said a few minutes later, the suspects rushed on the victim and forcibly had sex with her.

DSP Anim stated that the modus operandi of the suspects was that, one held the legs of the girl tightly to aid the other to have sexual intercourse with the victim in a rotational manner.

The suspects after committing the act took to their heels and left the victim in the room. The victim later went back to the school and narrated her ordeal to the school’s authorities who proceeded to lodge a complaint to the police leading to the arrest of the suspects.

The suspects, during interrogation, admitted the offence. DSP Anim told this paper they will be arraigned before a court.
