Want to Be GJA President?

The Ghana Journalists Association is inviting nominations for National Executive positions in elections scheduled for Thursday, August 21, 2003.

A statement signed by GJA General Secretary Bright Blewu said the filing of nominations would begin at 9.00 am on Friday July 25, 2003 at the Ghana News Agency and last for one week.

Positions to be contested at the national level are President, Vice President, General Secretary, Deputy General Secretary, Treasurer and two Executive Members.

In conformity with precedent, all candidates would be required to pay a non-refundable deposit at the filing of their nomination with the Elections Officer. At the national level, deposits shall be 200,000 cedis for President, 150,000 cedis for Vice President and 100,000 cedis for the other positions.

Only fully paid-up members qualify to contest and to vote.

Election of regional officers will come off on Thursday, 24th July 2003.

For regional branch elections, the non-refundable deposit the position of Chairman shall be 100,000 cedis, Vice Chairman, 80,000 cedis and for the other positions 40,000 cedis.

Filing of nominations will commence at 9:00 AM on Wednesday, July 2, 2003 and close on Monday, July 7, 2003 at 5:00 PM.

In the Accra-Tema metropolitan area, polling stations will be at the head offices of the GNA, New Times Corporation, Graphic Communications Group Limited, Ghana Broadcasting Corporation, the Tema District office of the GNA and at the Ghana International Press Centre. Polling will begin at 10:00 AM and end at 5:00 PM.

The GJA Elections Officer Mr. Mawusi Afele of the Ghana News Agency and his deputy will conduct the polls with the assistance of the Electoral Commission. Every regional branch, except Greater Accra, is to appoint its own regional Elections Officer.
