WANEP on peace ahead of SC verdict

The West African Network for Peace-building (WANEP-Ghana) has advised youth groups of the two major political parties to remain calm and embrace peace after the Supreme Court’s verdict on the election petition.

Mr Eric Nawai, Chairman of the Inter-party Youth Dialogue Committee of WANEP-Ghana said the youth groups of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have a responsibility to ensure that the country’s democratic credentials remained the same after the final verdict of the SC on the 29th of this month.

He said the country has a competent judicial system with experienced judges, who would give a fair judgment in the case before it, and urged the youth to trust the judges and abide by the verdict.

Mr Nawai, who is also the Deputy Northern Regional Director of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), was addressing the youth groups of the two parties in separate meetings in Tamale, at the weekend.

The WANEP-Ghana sensitization forms part of measures to address post-election verdict violence, which is supported by STAR-Ghana and was also aimed at reducing violence and promote peace after the verdict.

Mr Nawai commended the petitioners in the ongoing election petition for resorting to a constitutional procedure, saying, “We must all brace ourselves for the verdict on 29th”.

Mr Abdulai Yushawu, Chairman of the Aluta Boys, a youth wing of the NDC expressed their readiness of the group to avoid any form of violence and would remain peaceful after the verdict.

Mr Yushawu said members of political youth groups need jobs and not engaging in violence and appealed to politicians to help them to secure employment so that they would refrain from violent acts.

The NPP youth group also affirmed their readiness to support all peace processes in the country to ensure nation’s democracy was not truncated.
