‘WAEC has outlived its usefulness’ – Anis Hafer

An Educationist, Anis Hafer, has said the West African Examination Council (WAEC) is losing its relevance in the education of students in the country.

His comment comes on the back of the announcement by the exams body that it is introducing a new software to expose cheating students.

The software, the Item Differentiator, according to WAEC, has been piloted for two years now. It will analyze all objective answers to determine those which candidate cheated.

Speaking to Morning Starr host Nii Arday Clegg Monday, Mr. Hafer advised WAEC to explore modern and efficient ways of assessing the strength of students than strictly relying on examinations.

“…More and more, I am beginning to get convinced that WAEC has outlived its usefulness. Because this method of testing young people invariably fails a huge number of these young people. Are we going to spend the rest of our life failing a large number of Ghana’s population?

“This software are brought in to perpetuate a system that is not working. We have to begin to look at how to reorient the intelligence of every young person in this country,” he stated.

But the head of WAEC-Ghana, Reverend Samuel Nii Olenu, who also spoke on the show, said it is the hope of the West African body that the new software being introduced will curb cheating, particularly in the mathematics subject.
