Wa, Oct. 14, GNA– The Wa Polytechnic is to establish a meat-processing unit for academic and income generation purposes, Professor Sampson Agodzo, Principal of the Polytechnic has announced.
The Teaching and Learning Innovation Fund (TALIF) is supporting the establishment of the unit and the acquisition of learning and teaching materials for the Polytechnic.
Professor Agodzo announced this at the 5th Matriculation of the Wa Polytechnic at Wa on Saturday where 508 fresh students made up of 322 tertiary and 186 non-tertiary students were admitted to the Polytechnic for the 2007/2008 academic year swore an oath to obey its rules and regulations.
He said the Polytechnic would, this academic year introduce the Estate Management Programme in line with its strategic thinking and planning to make the Polytechnic a centre of excellence in science and technology.
Currently, the Polytechnic runs six fully accredited programmes and it is in the process of adding Mechanical Engineering and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) to its programmes, while it also envisaged to increases the programmes to 15 by 2015.
Professor Agodzo announced that in partnership with the National Board for Professional and Technician Examinations (NABPTEX) all the Polytechnics would soon start to offer access course to enable graduates of Technical and Vocational Institutes to upgrade themselves to gain admission to do Higher National Diploma (HND) programmes. He said the Polytechnic had also started to implement the
competency-based learning programme last year and its results were impacting positively on the professional education delivery.
Professor Agodzo said the Wa Polytechnic’s strategic thrusts are focused on human resource development, research, physical infrastructure expansion, ICT development and expansion and financial resource mobilization and management.
He said it was for this reason that the Polytechnic launched a 2-billion cedi Endowment Fund to benefit the development goals and assist brilliant but needy students last year.
He called on corporate bodies, public-spirited individuals and the district assemblies to contribute to the fund to enable the Polytechnic to provide quality training to its students to enhance national development.
