Wa Assembly sponsors 305 teacher trainees

Wa, April 28, GNA – The Wa Municipal Assembly is sponsoring 305 teacher trainees as a major step towards arresting the staffing problem facing schools in the area, which has resulted in a fall in educational standards.

Mr Godfrey Bayon Tangu, Wa Municipal Chief Executive, said the assembly had so far spent 91.5 million cedis on these trainees. He was addressing the first ordinary meeting of the assembly for this year at Wa on Tuesday.

Mr Tangu urged educational authorities to monitor these trainees inorder to ensure that they meet their obligations to the assembly after completing their courses.

He announced that 68 boreholes would be constructed in 56 communities at a total cost of 2.6 billion cedis by the end of this year.

On account of its credible performance during the fifth phase of the European Union Micro projects programme, he said the assembly had been selected for the sixth phase during which 16 projects would be executed. The projects include, rural clinics, classroom blocks, KVIPs, culverts and a warehouse at Wa.

Mr Tangu said out of an estimated revenue target of 1.5 billion cedis, the assembly collected 1.3 billion cedis last year. Mr Sahanun Mogtari, Upper West Regional Minister, in an addressing delivered for him, called on the assembly to use the session to work out strategies to ensure a peaceful and violence-free elections in the area.

He advised the assembly members not to play politics with the creation of the new districts since the exercise was based by the need to spread development to reach ordinary people in the rural areas.

Mr Mogtari assured other political parties that the NPP would conduct its campaigns with civility through the use of descent language and appealed to the other parties to do the same to avoid conflicts.

Though the assembly had recently taken pragmatic steps to increase its revenue, he said, it had the ability to double its target if it could plug all loopholes and eliminate corrupt practices by revenue officials.
