W/R House of Chiefs holds general meeting

Sekondi, Feb. 21, GNA – Mr. George Isaac Amoo, the National Coordinator of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), on Wednesday appealed to chiefs to monitor and make sure that adequate safety measures are put in place, especially in mining, road construction and building projects in their areas.

He made the call in an address read for him at the General Meeting of the Western Regional House of Chiefs at Sekondi.

Mr. Amoo said no agency could single-handedly prevent or manage disasters adding, “Disaster prevention is the responsibility of everybody”.

He appealed to chiefs to use their good traditional structures to help the NADMO in its mobilization and public education programmes towards Disaster Risk Reduction.

Chiefs could also collaborate with the relevant government agencies to resolve the high incidence of land disputes that are a great source of conflicts resulting in the loss of lives and destruction of property. Mr. Amoo said the NADMO has organized voluntary groups at the community-level to go into income generation ventures to help reduce vulnerability of communities to disasters.

Mr. Anthony Evans Amoah, Western Regional Minister, briefed the house about Ghana @ 50 activities in the region.
