W/R EC assures elections would come off

Sekondi, Dec. 30, GNA – Ballot Papers for the Unit Committee

elections in the Western Region is still not in, as at Wednesday

night. However, the Western Regional Electoral Officer, Mr Steve

Opoku-Mensah, has assured that the elections would take place as

scheduled, because vehicles carrying the ballot papers were on their

way to the commission’s office at Sekondi, from Accra. When the Ghana News Agency (GNA) visited the Regional

Offices of the Electoral Commission (EC), at Sekondi, the staffs of

the commission were awaiting the arrival of the ballot papers to sort

out and dispatch to the various districts. Meanwhile, ballot papers for the district assembly elections

arrived on Tuesday and have been dispatched. Mr Opoku-Mensah said 1,555 candidates, including 86 females,

are contesting the District Assembly Elections in the region. He said for the Unit Committee elections, a total of 4,741

candidates, including 447 females, are contesting. Mr Opoku-Mensah said the region has 544 electoral areas, and

that, all the necessary arrangements had been put in place, and that,

security personnel have also been dispatched to the various electoral

areas.
