The dam city of Akosombo on 6 August witnessed a massive demonstration by workers of the Volta River Authority (VRA). They were protesting, among others, against the continued rent payment for the strategic reserve plant (SRP).
According to the workers, the non-performing rental asset has made the country to incur extra $12 million debt aside of the initial $4 million letter of credit that was established by the VRA.
They accused some media houses of resorting to public relations work to save an individual at the expense of the taxpayer.
After their 12-noon break, the workers congregated at the dam site roundabout and drove in a convoy through the streets of Akosombo, amid the tooting of horns.
People emerged from their homes and poured onto the streets to give the workers moral support.
The red flag-bearing workers ended their peaceful demonstration at the VRA hospital and returned to their respective places of work at 1:00 p.m.
Meanwhile reports about the imminent return to office of chief executive, Dr. Charles Yves Wereko-Brobby has stirred the hornet’s nest at the authority’s locations throughout the country, Chronicle gathered.
It is not clear what exactly has been planned but from all indications, the stage has been set for a showdown between the over 3,000 workforce and the man, Tarzan.
Last Friday, a series of meetings were held first at Tema, the transmission nerve, then at the head office in Accra and later in the evening at Akosombo.
Intelligence reports gathered by The Chronicle from these meetings speak of a grave situation.
Last week, the senior staff association and union wrote to the sector minister, demanding a copy of the report of the ministerial committee that investigated the allegations levelled against the chief executive. They want it made public.
Meanwhile, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Nana Owusu Nsiah, has denied that police had been asked to provide armed guard for Dr. Charles Wereko-Brobby.
Nana Owusu Nsiah, who is exactly one year in office as the police boss, was speaking in an interview on Adom FM, a local radio station.
According to him, Dr. Wereko-Brobby, like any other citizen, needs police protection if that is called for but till then, his administration is not aware of anything like that for him.
