The Volta River Authority (VRA) on Friday in a symbolic gesture closed the chapter of history in its 50 years of existence by burying a “Time Capsule” that contained a repository of its corporate objects at a colorful ceremony at the forecourt of the Hydro generation plant at Akosombo.
The Time Capsule is a square stainless steel container provided by the International Time Capsule Incorporated in Atlanta, USA, guaranteed to last 500 years even against fire and flood damages should they occur where the capsule had been interred.
In the Container buried at the forecourt of the hydro generation plant, contained the VRA artifacts, memorabilia, technical reports, drawings, pictures and documents relevant to its past including the 50th anniversary celebration.
The seal of the burial pit was performed jointly by Professor Akilagpa Sawyer, Board Chairman of the VRA, Mr Emmanuel K. Kalitsi, and former Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of VRA, Mr Louis Casely-Hayford and Mr Kwaku Awotwi, the CEO.
It was dedicated by Most Reverend Joseph Afrifa-Agyekum, Catholic Bishop of the Koforidua Diocese.
Mr Awotwi said despite the challenges, the VRA had lived up to its mandate of providing energy to the people of Ghana and beyond and gave the assurance that in the next 50 years, the VRA would build upon the gains made over the years to have another success story to tell.
He said VRA was committed to national development through its operation and indicated that with all its challenges it was able to provide energy during the elections, explaining that although there were some power outages the fault was not from VRA.
Mr Thomas Marak, President of the Time Capsule Incorporated, said the capsule was a tool to preserve history and urged the academic community to study the history establishing such capsules for its value to be known.
