Vote for the candidate who can unite NPP, says NPP youth group

Tamale, July 23, GNA – A group calling itself the Concerned New Patriotic Party (NPP) Youth for Unity on Friday appealed to delegates who would be voting to elect the party’s presidential candidate on August 7th to elect the one who is capable of uniting the party.

They said the party stood the risk of loosing the 2012 election if one of the two leading candidates who were in the forefront of the last general election was elected as the presidential candidate because of the acrimony that their campaigns in the last primary generated.

Addressing a press conference in Tamale on Friday, the leader of the Concerned NPP Youth for Unity, Chief Sahanaa Alhassan Mozeli, said the group had travelled extensively to all the 10 regions in the country and had observed that the simmering tensions and personality clash that existed between the two candidates was still continuing.

“This will become more pronounced and what happened in the 2008 election will recur. The utterances, accusations and counter accusations between their camps are enough evidence to show delegates that if any of them is given the mandate to lead the party, we are going to face disunity in the race to the Castle”, Chief Mozeli said.

Chief Mozeli appealed to the delegates to identify and vote for one of the remaining three candidates who could bring unity to the party and ultimately recapture power for the party in 2012.

He said such a candidate should be dedicated, innovative, disciplined, selfless, loyal and ready to sacrifice for the party and Ghana adding that the groups’ observation had led them to believe that Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng possessed these qualities and should therefore be the preferred candidate to lead the party.

“He has the charisma to attract floating voters and even some members of the Nkrumaist parties, including members of the ruling party who are dissatisfied with the President Mills administration”, Chief Mozeli said.
