Accra, Aug. 27, GNA- Twenty-four new Peace Corps Volunteers have begun their service by taking up teaching in the Junior and Senior Secondary Schools.
The Peace Corps were sworn in at Techiman in the Brong Ahafo Region after successfully completing a 10-week community-based training program that emphasised language, culture and pedagogy to begin their two-year period of service.
A statement issued in Accra on Friday by the Public Affairs Section of the United States Embassy said 10 of the volunteers would teach sciences, including Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Integrated Science, six would handle Mathematics and two would take up Computer Skills while the remaining six will teach Visual Arts.
It said currently thirty-six volunteers were teaching in mostly rural schools to which Ghanaian teachers had refused posting.
The statement said the volunteers had established and facilitated Information Technology (IT) facilities and helped students, teachers and the broader community to access the Internet. They have connected some of them to US schools via e-mail.
Apart from the classroom teaching the volunteers have collaborated in the writing of supplementary teaching materials including manuals for some elective and core subjects, the statement said.
