Volta Region records increase in accident cases

Ho, Jan. 04, GNA – The Volta Region recorded a total of 483 accident cases in 2006 as against 295 in 2005. Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Simpson Abotsi, Volta Regional commander of the Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU) announced this in an interview with the Ghana News Agency on Thursday. He said a total of 593 vehicles were involved in the accidents resulting in 136 deaths in 2006.

ASP. Abotsi said 101 out of the cases were fatal, 152 serious, 288 minor cases with 644 injured persons.

He said 73 deaths and 581 injuries of various degrees were recorded in 2005.

ASP Abotsi attributed the high increase of accident cases to lawlessness of drivers.

He said it was unfortunate that despite embarking on educational programmes and seminars for drivers, they remained irresponsible on the road.

ASP Abotsi said his outfit was doing its best to get rid of all irresponsible drivers on the road and called for the public’s cooperation.

” We are poised to do more to reduce the rate but we are also appealing to all road users to help us and be law abiding to keep the road safe”, he said.
