Ho, May 25, GNA – The Volta Region Police Command has expressed concern over the increasing spate of vehicular carnage across the country including the Volta Region. A statement signed by Inspector Joy Afagbedzi in-charge of Public Affair Directorate of the command said in 2006 the region recorded 483 accidents involving 593 vehicles, 137 deaths and 644 injured.

In the first quarter of 2007, 119 accidents have been recorded with 29 deaths involving 162 vehicles. The statement attributed the accidents to indiscipline, speeding, non-maintenance of vehicles, drunkenness and the use of mobile phone while driving.

It said several meetings have been held with the high echelon of the GPRTU in the region to brainstorm on the causes of accidents to fashion out modalities and mechanism to control the phenomenon but the accidents continue to occur.
