Ho, Oct 07, GNA – Electricity consumers in the Volta Region are indebted to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to the tune of 20.5 billion cedis.
Mr Theophilus Asante Darku, the company’s Commercial Manager in the Volta Region, said this at a Regional Marketing durbar at Ho on Thursday.
He said the company stood to rake in 7 billion cedis every month if customers paid their bills promptly. Mr Darku said under the circumstances, the company had no option but to disconnect defaulting consumers.
”The Company has been magnanimous in allowing electricity consumers to use electricity in advance before being asked to pay. It will be bad business if payments have to be deferred over a longer period.’
Mr Felix Fiebor, Volta Regional Director of ECG, said the company was undertaking the Districts Update Project this year with a view to improving the system.
He said the load shedding currently taking place in the southern sector of the region would be extended to the rest of the region until new equipments are installed at Aflao to augment the VRA supply station at Asiekpe.
Mr Fiebor said from November 01 the company’s bills would no longer have to be paid at post offices.
Mr Benjamin Attah Akure, the Marketing Officer of the Company, took participants through safety precautions and cost effective ways of using electricity. Participants urged the ECG to carry out periodic public forums to enable them explain issues to consumers and also take suggestions to improve service delivery.
They suggested that the company should time their bills distribution to coincide with the salary payment schedules of Civil and Public Servants. 07 Oct 05
