A report released by Ghana AIDS Commission indicates that the country’s overall fight in elimination HIV/AIDS seems to be progressing steadily.
However, the prevalence rate in the Volta and Brong Ahafo regions still remain high and lead all regions currently in the country.
According to a Ghana AIDS Commission report, the prevalence rate for the two regions currently stands at 2.7 percent.
This was revealed recently by Dr Mokowaa Blay Adu, the Director-General of the Commission.
Dr Blay Adu addressing a press conference in Accra on Wednesday, disclosed that the 2016 HSS report shows that Ghana is doing extremely well in fighting the killer-disease but the two regions still lead in the prevalence rate.
“The Volta and Brong-Ahafo lead with 2.7 per cent. The region with the lowest prevalence is the Northern region with 0.7 per cent,” Dr. Blay Adu said.
The Director-General revealed that statistics available indicate that the two regions have taken over Greater Accra, which had the highest prevalence rate in 2015.
She also added that reduction rate in Eastern Region has been consistent in the past three years after it remained the highest prevalence region for several years.
The health professional insisted that knowing one’s HIV status and early treatment is the only way that can effectively combat the deadly disease.
