The Embassy of Ghana in Washington, DC in collaboration with Creative Artisans Art Consultancy, a Washington, DC based art group will host Ancient Traditions ? Contemporary Forms, an exhibition which explores innate similarities in the traditions of Ghanaian and African-American cultures.
The event which starts at the Chancery on September 17, and ends on October 3, 2004 will be through the media of paintings, sculptures and masks by contemporary Ghanaian and African-American artists.
According to Mr. Ivor Agyeman-Duah, Minister Counselor of Public Affairs, the exhibition intends to bring Ghanaian artists to Washington, DC to commune with their African-American colleagues. He says ? even though ancient traditions of Ghana have been absent from the African-American experience, yet they are reflected in their work.?
Mr. Agyeman-Duah says, the exhibition will expose Ghana?s rich culture and traditions as interpreted through it artists and provide exposure and market for their products.
Speaking to media representatives on the eve of ?Business Focus on Ghana,? a day annually declared by Howard County in Maryland to promote business in the county, Mr. Agyeman-Duah said, the art exhibition will be curated by Dr. Kwaku Ofori-Ansa of Howard University and Ms. Myrtis Bedolla, President of Creative Artisans. It would also produce a catalogue to serve as a historic document which will feature the artists works, biographies and comments by art curators. The exhibition will be crown with a seminar ?The Role of Visual Arts in the Development of Culture in Ghana.?
