Victor Smith denies offering GHC1m for Abuakwa seat

Ghana’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Emmanuel Victor Smith, has denied offering GHc1 million for the Abuakwa North constituency seat.

Reports in section of the media suggested that, Ambassador Smith is mounting pressure on the NDC Parliamentary candidate for the constituency, Tony Gyiamah to accept the amount in order to step down for him.

However, a group that supported Victor Smith in the 2012 election known as “Friends of Victor Smith” in the Abuakwa north constituency led by Kwame Owusu Danso on Tuesday denied the publication.

Mr. Danso who was cited in the publication as special aide to Victor Smith leading the negotiation stated at a press conference that, Ambassador Smith does not have much interest in contesting the seat as MP having publicly bowed out after losing the 2012 election to the late JB Danquah Adu.

He said, Ambassador Smith would have gone unopposed if he had wanted to contest the NDC Primaries.

Mr. Danso mentioned, however, that supporters of the NDC are clamoring and appealing to the national Executives of the NDC to intervene and replace the Parliamentary candidate with Ambassador Smith since the candidate has failed to prove his capability in helping the party win the seat in 2016.
