Vice President defends style of dressing

Accra, Oct. 14, GNA – The Spokesperson for the Vice President, on Wednesday played down the scathing criticism of a section of the public that the number two personality is too casual with his apparel during important state functions.

Mr John Abdulai Jinapor told the Ghana News Agency in an interview in Accra, that the affable nature of Mr John Dramani Mahama makes it possible for people to tell him during informal discussions at public gatherings, to be grandiose to conform to the trappings of his office.

Mr Jinapor observed that although Mr Mahama takes the criticisms in good faith, he is of the view that leadership is a national service that must go with modesty and humility.

He said before Mr Mahama became the Vice President, his love and attachment to the ideals of Pan Africanism and the cultural heritage of Ghana had made him a long time admirer of African fabrics like the smock and tie and dye.

Mr Jinapor noted that Mr Mahama feels good in African wear although he does not shy away from Western clothing.

“Mr Mahama simply wants to wear the smock, booboo, kente, jumper or anything traditional. Even when you spot him in coat and tye, he looks unassuming and modestly dressed for the occasion.

“The Vice President believes that his new appointment in life is the best opportunity for him to showcase the African Personality and market made- in- Ghana products.

“He had always argued that if Ghanaians do not patronise made in Ghana products, who should do so for them?”

Mr Jinapor said such nationalistic fervour from politicians would facilitate the African Personality concept of Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana’s first President.

“There is no doubt that the Vice President comes from a solid African background and he is very passionate about it.

“He believes that political power is transient hence the need to remain faithful to his roots and keep his head above water.” Mr Jinapor noted that the personal idiosyncrasies of the Vice President are likely to remain with him for a long time.
