Veterans Day marked in Cape Coast

A parade of 150 officers and men was held on Tuesday at the Cenotaph at the forecourt of the Cape Coast Castle to commemorate this year’s Remembrance Day.

The contingent comprised personnel from the Ghana Police Service, Ghana Prison Service, Ghana National Fire Service, Ghana Immigration Service, Metropolitan City Guards, Cadets from the St. Augustine’s College and some veterans.

Madam Queenstar Pokuwaa Sawyer, Deputy Central Regional Minister, laid a wreath on behalf of the Government, Osabarima Kwesi Atta II, Omanhene of Oguaa Traditional Area, laid another wreath on behalf of the Oguaa Traditional Council, DCOP Ransford Moses Ninson, Regional Police Commander, laid one on behalf of the security agencies while the fourth wreath was laid by Ex WO1Joseph Evans Omani, Regional Chairman of the Veterans Administration of Ghana (VAG).

A verse from Laurence Binyon’s Poem, “For the Fallen” popularly known as “Binyon Verse,” was read by Ex WO1 Omani after which a two- minute silence was observed for the souls of the fallen heroes.

At exactly 1100 hours, the last post was sounded accompanied by ringing of church bells, Ghana Fire Service siren and hoisting to full mast of the Ghana and the Veterans’ flags.

The ceremony ended with a route march through the principal street of Cape Coast by the veterans and security personnel.

The Veterans Day celebration is marked every November 11 to commemorate the end of World War 1 in 1918.
